DALLAS — Former coaches Fisher DeBerry of Air Force and Bill McCartney of the University of Colorado were named on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot Monday.
The National Football Foundation announced the names of 79 players and nine coaches on this year’s ballot. Among the players listed were former Broncos running backs Otis Armstrong (Purdue), Bobby Humphrey (Alabama) and Rob Lytle (Michigan) and Denver safety Paul Martha (Pittsburgh) as well as former Buffaloes Eric Bieniemy and Joe Garten and former Falcons safety Scott Thomas. The class will be announced in May.
• Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was informed some of his players had sold memorabilia to the owner of a tattoo parlor more than eight months before the school said it was made aware of the improper transactions, according to Yahoo Sports. If it is proven Tressel knew about the possible NCAA violations and did not inform athletic director Gene Smith or the compliance office, the coach and the program could face sanctions.
Texas Tech fires Knight
LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech fired Pat Knight, ending a disappointing tenure for a coach who failed to lead the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament after taking over for his father in February 2008. Knight, who went 50-60 in his first Division I coaching job, will coach the Red Raiders at this week’s Big 12 Tournament and then step down.
• Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fired Perry Clark after the former Tulane and Miami coach went 10-21 in his fourth season with the Islanders.
Suns lose Frye to shoulder injury
PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns are expected to be without forward Channing Frye for two to three weeks because of a dislocated right shoulder suffered during Sunday night’s loss at Oklahoma City.
• New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul is day to day while he recovers from a concussion.
• Former Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups missed his fourth straight game for the New York Knicks because of a bruised left quadriceps.
• Los Angeles Clippers guard Eric Gordon is out indefinitely after aggravating a right wrist injury Saturday against the Nuggets.

Georgia junior outfielder Johnathan Taylor underwent neck surgery to stabilize his spine a day after he was injured in a collision with a teammate during Sunday’s game against Florida State. The school did not reveal the extent of Taylor’s injuries.
• Two-time Olympic halfpipe gold medalist Shaun White needs surgery on his foot and will miss this weekend’s U.S. Snowboarding Championships in Vermont.
• Alex Morgan scored two goals to lead the U.S. women’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Finland in the Algarve Cup in Quarteira, Portugal. The Americans will play Iceland in Wednesday’s final.
• Robert Bundtzen was the first musher to leave the Rainy Pass checkpoint, while five-time champion Rick Swenson said he broke a collarbone during a fall in rugged terrain in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska.
