A section of a courthouse tower in southern Colorado collapsed Friday, closing the building indefinitely for safety reasons.

Large stones tumbled off the face of the Huerfano County Courthouse in Walsenburg and Chief Judge Claude Appel has ordered the courthouse closed, according to a Colorado State Judicial Branch media release.

“Until we have an opportunity to evaluate the structural integrity of the Courthouse, I do not believe we should risk the safety and security of the public and our staff,” Appel said.

No one was injured in Friday’s incident.

Huerfano County residents with jury summons did not have to appear at the courthouse this morning and a jury trial in the building has been moved to Trinidad.

State court officials are working with Huerfano County to find a local location for the court to resume operations as soon as possible.
