PUEBLO, Colo.—Joel Haywood scored 32 points and No. 3 Denver Lutheran scored its final 17 points from the free-throw line to beat No. 5 Lutheran-Parker 61-48 in the boys 2A state title game Saturday.
A raucous, standing-room-only crowd watched the Denver Lutheran Lights (23-4) claim their first boys state championship since 1986.
Denver Lutheran hitting 22 of 39 free throws to spoil Lutheran Parker’s (22-5) first attempt at a state title. Jonny Foote led the Lutheran-Parker Lions with 20 points.
The Lions closed the gap to 42-39 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Lights responded with an 8-0 run to pull away.
After trailing 10-9 heading into the second quarter, Denver Lutheran outscored Lutheran-Parker 21-10 in the second to take a 30-20 lead at the half.
