A guilty verdict after almost a year of tension should have been great news.

But for the family of Stephen and Patricia Smith of Cheyenne, last week’s conviction of the Windsor woman who killed the couple in a traffic crash last year was bittersweet. Laws intended to protect all citizens helped Landra Fabrizius, 26, of Windsor, get out of more serious charges after drugs were found in her system.

On Thursday, a jury convicted Fabrizius of two counts each of vehicular homicide while driving reckless and criminally negligent homicide. She was originally charged with vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, which would carry a mandatory prison sentence.

Fabrizius was under the influence of methamphetamines when she struck the Smith’s car head-on last Memorial Day, killing them instantly.

But blood tests that confirmed Fabrizius’ drug use were thrown out, giving her the possibility of a community-based sentence upon conviction.
