DENVER—Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper says he’ll sign into law a concussion-prevention bill that requires more youth coaches to be trained in recognizing head injuries.

The bill cleared the Colorado Legislature on Thursday.

Before sending it to Hickenlooper, the Senate voted 25-7 to add a parental notification requirement to the bill. Parents would have to be told when their children show signs of receiving a concussion.

The bill requires middle-school and recreation coaches to receive concussion training similar to that already required of high-school coaches. Some rural Republicans complained the requirement is a burden on small-town sports leagues, but the requirement prevailed as supporters pointed out that the training is free and can be completed online.

The NFL supported the bill.
