PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitians elect a new president today in a runoff election that is almost a year late and carries hope that a new leader can pull the country through its earthquake recovery.
About 4.7 million people are registered to choose between former first lady Mirlande Manigat, 70, and popular singer Michel Martelly, 50.
The elections take place amid the latest political upheaval sparked by the return Friday of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide after seven years in exile. He remains hugely popular, and tens of thousands of people greeted his return, while his political movement, Fanmi Lavalas, continues to boycott the electoral process.
