Boulder animal control officers rescued a small puppy that was found locked inside a hot car parked near Seventh and Pearl streets Monday afternoon.

Kim Kobel, a spokeswoman for Boulder police, said an animal control officer who responded used a laser thermometer to check the temperature inside the car, which read 90.8 degrees.

A second Boulder officer arrived and broke out the passenger-side window of the Subaru to get the puppy out. The officers wrapped the dog — which officials estimate is only a couple of months old — in a wet towel and offered it a bowl of water.

The owner of the Subaru — Travis Cameron Wintler, 20 — was ticketed on suspicion of cruelty to animals and neglect to animals, both municipal offenses. The cruelty charge carries a maximum fine of $1,000, while the neglect ticket carries a fine of $250.
