DURANGO, Colo.—The victims of a rare fiery, head-on collision west of Durango have been identified as a family of four from Colorado Springs.
The Durango Herald reported Thursday that Robert “Bobby” McDonald and his son, 10-year-old Jaden McDonald were killed. McDonald’s wife Leslie Wachter McDonald and their other son, 12-year-old Kellen McDonald, were critically injured with extensive burns in Tuesday’s crash.
The driver of the other vehicle was identified as 51-year-old James Hooper of Cortez. Authorities say his pickup collided with the McDonald family’s vehicle when he crossed a median into oncoming traffic.
The vehicles caught fire shortly after impact. Authorities say it’s unusual for vehicles to combust like that.
Family members say Leslie McDonald was flown to Albuquerque with internal injuries. Kellen McDonald was flown to a burn unit in Salt Lake City.
