LOS ANGELES — “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules,” the second film in a series based on popular children’s novels, grossed $24.4 million in ticket sales over the weekend, according to an estimate from distributor 20th Century Fox.

That was a major blow to “Sucker Punch,” which cost Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures $82 million to make but opened to $19 million.

The rest of the top 10 were “Limitless,” $15.2 million; “The Lincoln Lawyer,” $11 million; “Rango,” $9.8 million; “Battle: Los Angeles,” $7.6 million; “Paul,” $7.5 million; “Red Riding Hood,” $4.3 million; “The Adjustment Bureau,” $4.2 million; and “Mars Needs Moms!”, $2.2 million.
