GILLETTE, Wyo.—A Colorado coal company is working to develop two mines in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin, including a possible underground mine.
The Gillette News Record reports that Denver-based Liberty Coal Energy has a 640-acre state lease in southern Campbell County. The company estimates that there’s about 73 million tons of coal under the property and the surrounding area. A feasibility study shows that those supplies may best be mined underground.
Last week, the company said it was seeking to permit a drilling project in a 1,200 acre parcel north of Sheridan that extends to the Montana line. The company will decide how to mine that coal based on the drilling results.
