WELD COUNTY – — The sheriff’s office says one of two fires that started Saturday afternoon northeast of Greeley burned 1,800 to 2,000 acres.
Margie Martinez, a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office, said that fire started at County Road 83 and County Road 74 south of Briggsdale. High winds caused the fire to spread, but as of 9 p.m. was fully contained. The cause of this fire is still being investigated.
A second grass fire burned two to three acres near Galeton at County Road 49 and County Road 70. The fire destroyed an out building and some storage trailers. It was fully contained shortly before 8 p.m. Martinez says it may have been a prescribed burn that went out of control. This fire stayed on the property of the person who started it.
