Jefferson County is facing a $50,000 bill to cover the cost of water damage that occurred at the government center in Golden as a result of a water-line break Feb. 3. It could have been much worse.

The direct and indirect costs associated with the water damage were expected to be about $1.4 million, said Dan Brindle, director of Facilities and Construction Management.

The county’s insurance, however, with Great American Insurance, carries a deductible of $50,000.

More than 6,750 gallons of water flowed onto the lower floors of the government center, causing extensive damage to carpets and ceiling tiles.

There were 35,000 square feet of damage on the administration side of the Administration and Courts Facility at 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Brindle said. Every floor in the building was affected, with the second floor receiving the most damage.

Brindle said upgrading the fire-safety system has been a priority for a couple of years, and an upgrade had been under design for several months.

“It was a coincidence that the design and bidding process for the upgrade project were completed at about the same time that the flood occurred,” Brindle said.

Work has been focused on restoration of drywall and ceiling tiles and replacing carpet, furniture and electronic equipment.
