PUEBLO, Colo.—Pueblo school officials are considering closing schools, furloughing employees and contracting out transportation and custodial services to help cut nearly $7 million to balance the new budget.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that school district officials this week proposed 21 money-saving ideas, including using $2.7 million from reserve funds. Among the recommendations is to close two elementary schools to save $700,000 and a middle school to save $750,000.

Making all employees take furlough days would save an estimated $770,000. The district has also proposed offering incentives to employees to retire.

A spending bill moving through the Colorado Legislature would cut $250 million in state funds for K-12 education.
