DENVER—A tax break for business has passed the Colorado House over Democratic complaints that it could hurt local school funding.

The bill would exempt business equipment purchased in 2012 and 2013 from taxes.

The GOP-led House heard hours of debate on the tax break earlier this month. On a final vote Monday, all Democrats but one voted against the break. It passed 34-31.

The tax break now heads to the Democratic Senate, where its prospects are dim. Democrats say local governments are free to waive those taxes now if they wish.

The tax break wouldn’t affect the budget for next fiscal year, but could trim tax receipts in the future.
