Getting your player ready...

As most fans will agree, it’s pretty cool to be in the stands for a baseball, football or hockey matchup and a thrill beyond words to get up close and personal with some of the greats of the game.

Which is no doubt why the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet always sells out, often within days after invitations are mailed. Attendees know they’ll be able to shake hands with some major athletes during cocktail hour and most likely pick up an autograph or souvenir photo too.

The 2011 inductees were Larry Walker, a five-time National League All-Star and three- time NL batting champ who was an outfielder for the Colorado Rockies from 1995-2004; race car legend Bobby Unser; Jason Elam, a kicker for the Denver Broncos from 1993- 2007; Alfred Williams, who’d been a defensive lineman for the Denver Broncos and the University of Colorado; former USA Hockey manager Art Berglund; and Keli McGregor, who was president of the Colorado Rockies until his sudden death in April 2010 at age 47. His widow, Lori, accepted on his behalf.

Tom Lawrence, president and chief executive of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, and board chair Jim Kellogg said dinner proceeds will go to nine organizations, including the National Sports Center for the Disabled, Special Olympics Colorado, Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives, Denver City LAX and Sportswomen of Colorado.
