CONIFER, Colo.—More than 30 homes have been evacuated because of a 40-acre wildfire burning in the foothills southwest of Denver.

Authorities said Friday the fire is about 20 percent contained. No structures have burned and no injuries have been reported.

Dan Hatlestad (HAD’-uhl-stad) is a spokesman for Inter-Canyon Fire Rescue. He says residents in the evacuation area will be escorted back to their homes on Friday to check on pets or pick up clothing or medicine, but they’ll have to leave again.

Hatlestad says firefighters are concerned about the Friday forecast, which calls for wind gusts of up to 50 mph.

The fire is burning in open, grassy areas and on steep, rocky slopes with heavy timber.

Hatlestad says the fire broke out Thursday. The cause hasn’t been determined.
