Security will be beefed up at Ponderosa High School’s graduation ceremony next month after Westboro Baptist Church’s threat to protest the event because of a newspaper column written by a student.
Student Ryan Wheeler wrote a Colorado Voices column published March 20 in The Denver Post that discussed the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that Westboro had the constitutional right to hold anti-gay protests at military funerals.
The student’s father, Rick Wheeler, said the school informed him of the threat to protest by Westboro, a Topeka, Kan., church well-known for protesting soldier funerals using anti-gay messages.
