Icy roads caused delays for drivers in southern Colorado this morning.

Icy spots on I-25 near Castle Rock caused several cars to slide off the road, some colliding with guard rails, according to Nate Reid, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

Two injury accidents were reported on I-25 this morning, one a mile south of Plum Creek, the other near Toma Road, Reid said.

“Castle Rock Fire has been very busy this morning on Interstate 25, both northbound and southbound,” Castle Rock Fire Battalion Commander, Eric Morgenthaler, said. “The biggest thing is slow down and take a look around.”

Morgenthaler said fire crews responded to six accidents near Castle Rock, and 3 people were taken to area hospitals with injuries.

Cold morning temperatures and wet conditions caused the road to ice over in some areas, but conditions improved quickly once the sun started warming the highways, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

CDOT crews worked to improve the roads and alerted drivers about the accidents scattered along the interstate.

In addition to icy spots, fog and poor visibility were reported in the area.
