The Colorado Mammoth’s season came to an end Saturday night with a 10-6 road loss to the Calgary Roughnecks in the first round of the National Lacrosse League playoffs at the Saddledome.
Colorado outshot the NLL’s best regular-season team 49-43, but the Mammoth allowed four unanswered goals in the second period and never recovered.
John Grant Jr. led the Mammoth with three goals and one assist. The Roughnecks were led by Dane Dobbie (three goals, one assist), Scott Ranger (three goals, one assist) and Curtis Dickson (two goals, one assist). Calgary’s Mike Poulin held the Mammoth scoreless for nearly 30 minutes in the second half, allowing only one goal in the third period.
Byrd, Hunter national champions.
Denver boxer Louie Byrd defeated St. Louis’ Stephon Young by decision to win the 114-pound division at the National Golden Gloves tournament in Indianapolis. Byrd became the first to win four Gloves titles in four different weight divisions.
At 201 pounds, Colorado Springs’ Michael Hunter defeated Robert Jekabson of Chicago by decision to win his division as well. Hunter received the Golden Boy Award as the event’s outstanding boxer. The Colorado-New Mexico team finished third in the team race.
Eagles rally to even series.
Kevin Ulanski scored a power-play goal at 16:59 in the third period to lift the Colorado Eagles to a 4-3 win over the Rapid City Rush in Rapid City, S.D., in the Central Hockey League’s Turner Conference finals.
Aaron Schneekloth assisted on Ulanski’s goal and scored the game-tying goal in the second period. The win evens the series at 1-1.
