CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—A July 5 trial has been set for a Colorado fugitive’s mother and sister who face federal charges linked to the fatal shooting of a Chattanooga police officer.
Jesse Mathews is charged in state court with fatally shooting police Sgt. Tim Chapin outside a Chattanooga pawn shop April 2 as officers responded to a robbery alarm. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
At a hearing Monday, Mathews’ mother, 57-year-old Kathleen Mathews, and his sister, 21-year-old Rachel Mathews, pleaded not guilty to charges that include obstructing justice by concealing weapons stolen by Jesse Matthews.
Jesse Matthews’ father, Ray Vance Mathews, and family acquaintance James David Poteete are also charged and are to be tried in federal court July 5 in Chattanooga.
