WETMORE, Colo.—Crews are working to contain a southern Colorado wildfire before windy weather returns.
The 555-acre wildfire is burning on national forest land near Wetmore, south of Canon City. U.S. Forest Service officials said the fire was 70 percent contained Monday night.
Snow fell over the weekend but didn’t put the fire out.
The fire prompted the evacuation of about 40 homes and cabins near Wetmore but residents have been allowed back. Fire managers say the blaze started April 26, likely by a lightning strike.
Warmer weather with highs in the 60s and strong winds are forecast on Wednesday.
