DENVER—The state board of education has narrowed down their search for the next commissioner of education to one person.

The board announced Tuesday that Robert Hammond has been named as the sole finalist.

Hammond has been filling in as commissioner since December when former commissioner Dwight Jones left to head the Las Vegas school system.

The board announced two finalists on April 21, but state law requires that at least two weeks pass before they make an official appointment.

Officials say the board hasn’t announced when they’ll be making the final appointment, but it might be at their next regularly scheduled meetings on May 11 and 12.

Hammond has previously been the chief operations officer for the Boulder Valley School District.
