WASHINGTON — A U.S. official says a drone attack in Yemen last week was targeting radical American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who is active in planning and promoting terror attacks by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
The strike by an unmanned Predator drone struck a car in southern Yemen, killing two brothers believed to be al-Qaeda militants. There has been no suggestion that the strike stemmed from intelligence gathered at the Pakistan compound where Osama bin Laden was killed last week by U.S. commandos.
Al-Awlaki is a key recruiter and inspirational leader in al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and has been linked to attacks on America, including the massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, that left 13 dead.
