FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Former Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck is serving as the special prosecutor in an investigation of the former chairman of the Larimer County GOP.

The Coloradoan reports that Republican Larimer County District Attorney Larry Abrahamson recused himself from the investigation, saying he has contributed financially to the local GOP, once headed by Larry Carillo.

Fort Collins police began investigating Carillo in March after the Colorado secretary of state proposed fining the party a record $48,700 for late campaign finance reports. The Coloradoan reports Carillo has accepted responsibility and denies using party money improperly.

Buck narrowly lost to Democrat U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet last year. Buck told The Associated Press on Wednesday that there’s no personal or financial relationship that would cause a conflict of interest of his investigating the case.
