DENVER—Colorado lawmakers are bucking Gov. John Hickenlooper by unanimously overriding some of his budget vetoes.
Wednesday’s vetoes didn’t relate to any state spending, but to footnotes inserted by lawmakers in the $18 billion budget. The House and Senate both voted unanimously to override Hickenlooper’s vetoes of several footnotes, which the governor argued exceeded legislative authority.
The footnotes included a directive to the education department about money for radio and television broadcasts.
Lawmakers argued that while the governor has the ability to veto particular items in the budget, called a “line-item” veto, he cannot simply veto a footnote from the Legislature.
