GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—Garfield County commissioners are backing a new proposal to study risks of emissions from oil and gas drilling, a week after deciding to end work on another study.

The Post Independent reports the state health department has applied for federal money to evaluate short-term risks of emissions from well pads and related trucking operations, and county commissioners voted 2-1 vote Monday to endorse the application.

Last week, commissioners decided to end work on a Colorado School of Public Health study of potential impacts of proposed drilling by Antero Resources in the Battlement Mesa community. A draft of that study’s conclusions said residents would likely be affected by air pollution from well development.

County health officials say the new state study would focus on short-term risks rather than long-term air quality.
