Someone used a creative mix of profanity, vandalism and phonetics to express an opinion at the Grace United Methodist Church early this morning.

The letters on the church’s four illuminated signs were re-arranged into two new messages that included profanity and the word “meth,” said Pastor Jeffrey Babb.

One of the signs originally displayed a quote from Abraham Lincoln. The new message left by the Scrabble vandal read, “If you are a scared (expletive) then go to church.”

Babb took down the letters of the two rearranged signs after he received several phone calls and e-mails this morning.

“It was very creative, turning the letters into words,” Babb said. “I was just glad that they didn’t use spray paint.”

Babb said there have been several incidents where people have used paints to vandalize the church, located at Yale Avenue and Eudora Street, but nothing like this.

About 15 screws had to be removed from the clear panels that cover the letters.

“It must have taken a lot of time to do this,” Babb said. “I just tried to get it down quickly.”

Different-colored letters were mixed together to create the new sentences, something Babb said inspired him with a new idea for the signs.

Now he might try placing a few red letters with the black ones, spelling an additional, hidden, message on the sign.
