Fort Lewis’ Gavin Lyons was tied for the lead Monday after shooting a 3-under-par 69 in the first round of the men’s NCAA Division II golf championships in Florence, Ala., and the Skyhawks were tied for fourth in the 20-team field.
Lyons, a senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., and co-champion of the RMAC Tournament last month, had five birdies in his opening round. The Skyhawks’ team total was 8-over 296. Top-ranked Lynn University of Boca Raton, Fla., led the Skyhawks by five strokes entering today’s second round.
“We played well,” Fort Lewis coach Bud Andersen said. “Gavin is playing solid golf. This is a brutal golf course.”
CSU-Pueblo (307) was 11th in the team standings after the first round. The top eight teams after three rounds advance to match play Thursday. The tournament wraps up Friday.

Robinson was the assistant director and top instructor since 2006 at the Edge Training Facility in Orlando, Fla. He managed daily basketball operations and guided skill development sessions, camps and clinics.
“His Air Force military experience adds a great dimension that our women can tap into for their own future careers as officers in the Air Force,” AFA head coach Andrea Williams said.
Grandview tight end picks Oregon.
Shortly after his junior season ended, Grandview’s Evan Baylis exploded on the national recruiting scene. And shortly after his recruitment blew up, Baylis ended it.
The 6-foot-6, 225-pound tight end committed to Oregon this month.
“I’m glad it’s over,” he said. “It kind of got a little stressful at the end.”
That’s because Baylis, one of the state’s high-profile football recruits, drew offers from at least a dozen schools.
He said Oregon “felt like a home for me.”
It didn’t hurt that the Ducks’ quick-strike, no-huddle offense utilizes the tight end. “That definitely should be fun,” Baylis said. “It’s a really explosive offense and the practices are really fast.”
Oregon played in last season’s Bowl Championship Series title game, losing 22-19 to Auburn.
Baylis caught 33 passes last season for 428 yards and six touchdowns.
