AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.—Air Force Academy firefighters have been named the best in the Air Force.
The academy said this week its department competed against 175 other Air Force fire and emergency services agencies. Each submitted a report on its service, recognitions, innovations and initiatives.
The academy department’s report detailed life-saving actions at a parachuting accident, fighting several major fires and responding to more than 300 incidents on Interstate 25 along the eastern edge of the academy campus.
The firefighters also mentored other departments, donated hundreds of hours to charities and provided a fire education program.
The academy department is designated the Fire and Emergency Services Flight of the 10th Civil Engineer Squadron.
It’s now in the running for Defense Department Fire Department of the Year. The winner will be announced in August.
