When Fountain police officers arrived at the scene of a domestic disturbance Monday afternoon, Gammall Perez told them to leave or he would kill his family.

Then he started to count backward from five, so the two officers backed away from the house and called for assistance, Fountain Police Chief Todd Evans said at a news briefing Wednesday.

Perez was talking from a second-floor window and showed a gun during the exchange. One police officer was at the front door and a second was at the garage door, Evans said.

Within minutes, Shannon Paolini tried to flee from the house in the 7900 block of Gate Post Lane and was wounded outside by Perez. Three officers were about 200 yards away but were unable to shoot at Perez, who ran back into the house, Evans said.

A six-hour standoff ensued, during which Perez killed his 2-year-old son, Gavin Paolini, and himself. Police said both died of a single gunshot wound.
