DENVER—Officials say a skier has died after he was swept up in an avalanche on Torrey’s Peak.
The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Department says Joel Levenberg from Superior was pulled more than 1,000 feet over rocks on the east side the mountain Saturday afternoon.
The Sheriff’s Department says rescuers reached the 38-year-old on Saturday evening at an elevation around 12,800 feet.
Officials say Levenberg told rescuers he had chest and hip injuries.
The Denver Post reports wind blowing at more than 50 mph created a white-out and prevented the rescue team from airlifting Levenberg.
Authorities say he died on the mountain from his injuries a few hours later.
Levenberg and two friends planned to ski down the mountain after hiking to the summit. Authorities say Levenberg skied first, triggering the avalanche.
