LA JUNTA — Several wildfires are burning in southeast Colorado again tonight.

“We’ve got fires burning in several locations,” said Chris Sorenson, the emergency management spokeswoman for several counties in the region. “We’ve got resources all over the place, so information is moving slow.”

There are no reports of injuries or lost homes, but at least three homes have been threatened.

At least four fires in Otero, Bent and Las Animas counties, including one in Bent Canyon on Fort Carson’s Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site, have burned several thousand acres, officials said.

Lightning is thought to have caused the fires.

A critical “red flag” fire danger had been in effect until 9 p.m. today, because of high wind, low humidity and dry fuel.

Another red flag warning will be in effect for the region from noon to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Wind gusts up to 40 mph could complicate fire-fighting efforts.

While much of Colorado experienced a deep snowpack and wet May, southwest Colorado has remained relatively dry, according to weather data.
