CENTENNIAL, Colo.—Coloradans are helping the country of Slovenia celebrate the 20th anniversary of its independence

The Slovenian ambassador, Roman Kirn, planted a linden tree at the headquarters of the Colorado National Guard in Centennial on Friday. Nearly every state guard has an overseas partnership and the Colorado Guard and the Slovenian military have being working together for the last 18 years.

Kirn also planted a tree Thursday in Pueblo, where many Slovenian immigrants settled to work in mines and the city’s steel mill.

That tree was also a linden, which is common in forests and villages in Slovenia, a place also known for its mountains and skiing.

Currently, members of the Colorado Air National Guard and Slovenian soldiers are training together in Slovenia for a joint mission in Afghanistan.
