Fire crews are facing more windy weather as they battle a wildfire burning on 2,300 acres in the southern Colorado mountains.
Fire managers said Tuesday that the fire has the potential to grow and has two active fronts. The fire is burning in rugged terrain and sparking new fires a quarter-mile ahead of the main blaze.
Custer County Sheriff Fred Jobe said residents of about 50 homes there have been warned to be ready to evacuate if the fire spreads far enough south. Residents of another 50 homes in Fremont County to the north have already been asked to voluntarily evacuate, but it’s not clear how many have decided to leave. The fire started Sunday 16 miles northwest of Westcliffe. The Associated Press
