DENVER—Denver City Council members are considering repealing an initiative that allows police to impound cars if drivers don’t have a license.

Councilman Paul Lopez said it has been a legal nightmare for the city and needs to go.

The law allows police to impound a vehicle if the driver isn’t carrying a license. It also requires drivers to pay a $2,500 bond and hefty fees to get it out. Voters passed the law in 2008.

According to KDVR-TV, the ballot measure was supposed to target unlicensed illegal immigrants, but hundreds of innocent Coloradans believe their cars have been unjustly impounded.
