RATON, N.M.—More residents are being allowed to return home as firefighters battling a blaze along the New Mexico-Colorado border brace for winds that are expected to test their fire lines.

The Track fire has charred nearly 26,000 acres since starting Sunday.

Crews working in rugged terrain have contained 20 percent of the blaze. They have used bulldozers and air support to bolster lines on the northern and eastern flanks and hope those lines will hold once the weather turns.

Residents in several neighborhoods closest to Raton have been allowed to return. In all, several hundred residents were initially evacuated and some still remain out of their homes.

Traffic is flowing again along Interstate 25 between Raton and Trinidad, Colo. The highway had been closed for four days because of the fire.
