A convicted child molester was arrested on charges of attacking two officers with scissors at a community corrections facility in Mesa County, officials said.

Paul Savage, 22, was being held Saturday for two counts of first-degree assault and one count of attempted first-degree assault, said Kate Porras, Grand Junction police spokeswoman.

Savage allegedly assaulted two workers at the Powell Building, 650 South Ave., said Jessica Peterson, spokeswoman for Mesa County.

The employees received minor puncture wounds and cuts, Porras said. Neither victim was taken to the hospital.

Community Corrections inmates stay at the unlocked Powell Building in lieu of going to prison. They are expected to hold outside jobs and obey rules.

At the time of the alleged attack, Savage was being searched after violating unspecified rules. Employees found the the sewing scissors and placed them on a counter. Savage allegedly snatched the scissors and attacked the workers, Porras said.

He has prior arrests for sex offenses, assaults and illegal weapons charges. He was charged with several child molestation offenses in 2008, including sexual assault on a child by someone in a position of trust, according to state court records.

He was given a four-year community sentence last year.
