MONTROSE, Colo.—Conservation district officials are warning that lives and property may be at risk unless Montrose County helps maintain three flood-control dams.
The Shavano Conservation District says it can no longer afford to pay about $18,000 in maintenance costs because of the recession.
District vice president Ken Lipton says the dams are used only for flood control and are now structurally sound. But he warned if there is a flood, there will be damage to croplands, bridges, roads, and homes.
Lipton tells the Montrose Daily Press a storm in 1982 caused $1.3 million in damage.
