GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Part of a trail in the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area that collapsed into the Gunnison River is temporarily closed to horseback riders and motor travel.
A 40-foot section of the trail collapsed June 11 because of saturated soil. The Bureau of Land Management said Monday that the potential for more collapses makes it unsafe for horseback riders and motorized travel, but the trail is still open to hikers.
The trail provides access to the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness. The closure is between the Bridgeport footbridge and the mouth of Dominguez Canyon.
The trail typically sees about 7,200 visitors each year.
