A tense time ensued after a Summit County homeowner found a month-old moose trapped in a window well last weekend.

The Breckenridge-area homeowner heard noises at 2 a.m. Saturday, and originally feared it was bear, the Red, White and Blue Fire District said today.

At 7:30 a.m., the frightened 75-pound calf was discovered in the 3-foot window well in front of the home on Peak 7.

Rescuers tried to coax it out, but the mini-moose was too frightened and the board put in the hole was too slick, the fire department stated. Eventually, the animal was lifted out by webbing and set free, as its parents and a sibling waited nearby.

“We could hear them crashing around in the woods,” said Sheriff’s Office Deputy Daric Gutzwiller, one of the first rescuers to arrive at the home.

Added Red, White and Blue Fire Chief Lori Miller: “One minute, our firefighters are rescuing people out of an elevator, and the next, they’re outside rescuing a moose calf out of a window well.”
