ANDALUSIA, Ala.—A pilot who died after his airplane crashed less than a mile from the runway at South Alabama Regional Airport in Andalusia is being identified as a 58-year-old Colorado man.
Doug Dahl of Indian Springs, Colo., a contractor, was killed Sunday. Eyewitnesses said the plane made several passes around the airport before it went straight down. The plane apparently dipped its left wing and went into the trees.
Covington County Chief Deputy David Anderson said the pilot was the only person in the plane, and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
Butch Wilson of the National Transportation Safety Board said the crash happened around 4:55pm and involved an experimental airplane called a “Barracuda”. The craft was made of wood.
