It’s the all-star break, and third baseman Ian Stewart is hitting .106. Ugly as that number is, it’s better than the .079 mark he carried into Sunday’s game. The Rockies are committed to giving Stewart playing time, and he responded with two hits. Stewart is 7-for-66, including 4-for-19 since returning from Triple-A. The most troubling part of all: He has only two extra-base hits, both doubles, in those 66 at-bats. He went into the season with a career mark of one extra-base hit per 9.7 at-bats.
Some catching up to do.
Backup catcher Matt Pagnozzi is hitting .286 and is considered solid defensively. But the Rockies are 0-7 in his starts with a 7.35 ERA — compared with 32-35, 3.96 for Chris Iannetta.
From cloud nine to four K’s.
Two days after his first big-league hit, rookie Cole Garner struck out four times.
