BOULDER — A Boulder County man is facing theft charges after he disappeared along with $150,000 in gold coins that belonged to his grandfather.
Charles W. Folden IV, 19, was reported missing June 19 from his grandparents’ home, where he was staying for a few weeks during summer vacation from Colorado State University.
According to a police report, the grandparents had gone out of town for the weekend, leaving Folden in charge of the house. When they returned, he wasn’t home, and calls to his cellphone went straight to voice mail.
All of Folden’s personal belongings, including his laptop, were still at the house, but 100 gold Krugerrand coins, worth $1,500 each, as well as hundreds of silver coins and cash were missing.
On June 21, an Effingham County sheriff’s deputy stopped Folden for speeding on Interstate 95 near Savannah, Ga. After searching the vehicle, the deputy found a number of gold coins and a large amount of cash.
Folden’s grandparents decided to press criminal charges, according to the report, and Folden was booked into the Boulder County Jail on June 27.
