On Tuesday, the Avon Town Council moved closer to putting two tax-increase questions on the November ballot.

The council voted (with member Dave Dantas casting the sole dissenting vote) to approve on first reading a pair of ordinances to ask voters a pair of tax questions.

If they approve, they may help solve a question nearly as old as the town — how to find a dedicated revenue source for bus service.

Since the local economy followed the rest of the nation into an economic slump a couple of years ago, town officials have increasingly struggled with how to continue to fund the town’s bus system. Service has been cut, and officials say more cuts are inevitable without additional sources of money.

The current proposal would ask voters for a 0.4 percent sales tax increase along with a 1 percent lodging tax increase. The lodging tax would be by far the smaller source of money, raising only about $156,000 of the estimated $1.35 million total.
