LONDON — BP said Friday that it was changing its deepwater drilling standards in the Gulf of Mexico as it seeks to repair its reputation and resume offshore operations after last year’s disastrous oil spill.

The changes, which the oil giant promised in a letter to U.S. regulators, focus mainly on carrying out extra safety measures to avoid the problems that led to the oil spill. They stopped short of anything far-reaching and were more for general safety.
