Boulder County authorities are warning residents to be on the lookout for snakes following an increase in the number of reported confrontations.

Sheriff’s Office animal control officer Terri Snyder says unusually wet weather is driving snakes from their burrows, while hot weather is luring them to sun themselves on rocks.

There have been so many snake reports in the Lake Valley area that officers have nicknamed it snake valley.

Snyder tells the Boulder Daily Camera that most of the calls involve non-venomous bull snakes, which are often mistaken for venomous rattlesnakes because they coil up and shake their tails.

So far, several dogs have been bitten in Boulder County this year, but no humans.
