A little bit peloton, a little bit NASCAR. The inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado next month will dress the pace rider with a yellow jersey, as is traditional in international cycling races.

But the Colorado version will be a checkered yellow jersey, reminiscent of a motorsports checkered flag.

“In creating each of these jerseys,” race co-chairman Shawn Hunter said in a news release, “we valued the time- honored traditions of the world tours while providing modern twists to make them unique.”

Other jerseys include the green sprint, red mountain (similar to the polka-dot climbing jersey of the Tour de France) and blue young rider (best of the under-23s).

And there will be a jersey unique to the USA Pro Cycling Challenge: an orange top denoting the most aggressive rider.
