DENVER—The Environmental Protection Agency plans to hold public hearings in Colorado, Texas and Pennsylvania on its proposed regulations for controlling air pollution at oil and gas wells.

The EPA released its rules proposal Thursday to meet a court deadline. It is taking public comments on its proposal and plans hearings in the Denver, Dallas and Pittsburgh areas. Details of the hearings haven’t been announced yet.

The EPA aims to reduce emissions that contribute to smog and can cause cancer. Its proposed rules focus on having operators capture and sell natural gas that currently escapes into the air. The proposal includes the first federal air standards for wells that are hydraulically fractured, or fracked.
