So you think you can dance? OK, but can you do it on a pole? Floor and pole dancing are coming to Denver in the next few months.
Aspen’s Holly “Honey” Miely is in town Aug. 5-7 for an international pole-dancing competition. Pole Dancing Universe is the first of its kind and will slide proudly into the Oriental Theater.
Miely runs Honey’s Pole Fitness Studio as a training center for women between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. In addition to teaching, Miely presents Honey’s PoleCat Revue, an all-female dance group that includes belly dancers and fire dancers. She describes it as “Cirque du Soleil meets Pussycat Dolls.”
People have misconceptions about pole dancing, says Miely. “What you see in a strip club you won’t see in a pole-dancing class,” she says.
So what are her chances at the Pole Dancing International competition?
“It depends on what the judges are looking for,” she says. “I’m just looking to see some of my pole friends.”
Also, tickets go on sale today at for the “So You Think You Can Dance” touring company, tapping into the 1stBank Center on Oct. 24 with finalists from the show: Caitlynn, Clarice, Jess, Jordan, Marko, Melanie, Mitchell, Ricky, Sasha and Tadd.
I’d rather watch the pole.
In and out
. Peggy Bunker, the beloved former morning anchor at Fox 31, has moved on from her co-anchor slot at ABC’s middle-of-the-night “World News Now.” She took on the position in February — but I don’t know how she lasted this long with new twins and commuting in the middle of the night to NYC from Greenwich, Conn. “It’s going to be tough,” she told me then. “I put in an emergency call to my mother.”
Bunker did not answer phone calls Thursday, but she posted on Facebook: “Enjoying my first vacation in quite some time — lots of people to thank for their nice messages. . . . Thank you! Gotta say, living in daylight hours is pretty nice. . . . Hope everyone is enjoying their summer!”
As Bunker moves on, former Denver reporter/anchor Harry Smith has moved from longtime employer CBS to NBC, where he’ll be a correspondent on a weekly magazine show helmed by Brian Williams.
Beatles
. Tom Mustin will take a break from the CBS4 weekend-anchor gig to sit in with Dan Mitchell on 99.5 The Mountain from 9-10 Sunday morning for “Breakfast With the Beatles.”
I told the dapper anchor that appearance doesn’t matter much on radio. “I know,” he said. “I’m going to wear a ratty Beatles shirt and just hang out.”
City spirit
. Drag Nation, the country’s biggest drag show, comes to the Exdo Event Center at 9 tonight. Tix are $12 at the door . . . Euclid Hall celebrates its first anniversary with a party Aug. 9, and you’re invited . . . Sez who: “I would believe only in a God that knows how to dance.” Friedrich Nietzsche
