WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Anthony Kim, who can earn a spot in next week’s Bridgestone Invitational with a win, shot an 8-under-par 62 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead after the third round of the Greenbrier Classic.
Kim is at 10-under 200 on the Old White TPC course. Tour rookie Scott Stallings shot a 66 to move into second place at 9-under. Gary Woodland (67) and Webb Simpson (69) are two shots back.
• Caroline Masson of Germany shot a 4-under 68 to double her lead to two strokes after the third round of the Women’s British Open in Carnoustie, Scotland.
The 22-year-old Masson made three birdies on the front nine and three on the back to hold off a late charge from Yani Tseng (66).
• While Rory McIlroy fell out of contention at the Irish Open in Killarney, his playing partner David Howell shot a round-best 7-under 64 to take a share of the lead with England’s Simon Dyson and Australia’s Richard Green, who both finished with rounds of 67 to join Howell at 11-under 202.
Serena advances to final
STANFORD, Calif. — Serena Williams, who needed nearly a year to recover from surgery, moved into the final of the Bank of the West Classic with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Germany’s Sabine Lisicki.
The unseeded and 169th-ranked Williams will meet third-seeded and ninth-ranked Marion Bartoli of France, who advanced when Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova withdrew from the other semifinal because of a strained abdominal muscle.
• Mardy Fish fought from behind in the third set to advance to his second straight final, beating teenager Ryan Harrison 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (3) at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles. In the late semifinal, American Alex Bogomolov Jr. faced Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.
Owen lifts Manchester United
LANDOVER, Md. — Michael Owen scored on a counterattack in the 76th minute to give Manchester United a 2-1 victory over FC Barcelona in front of 81,807 at FedEx Field.
Nani also scored early for United, which exacted a measure of revenge in a preseason exhibition that doubled as a rematch of Barcelona’s 3-1 victory in last May’s Champions League final.
• Landon Donovan scored twice, including a penalty kick in the 75th minute, and the Los Angeles Galaxy extended its MLS unbeaten streak to 14 games with a 4-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
• Teal Bunbury scored his first goal since April in the 89th minute to give Sporting Kansas City a 1-1 tie with the visiting New England Revolution.
• Brian Ching scored twice as the host Houston Dynamo ended the Seattle Sounders’ nine-game unbeaten streak with a 3-1 victory.
• Eddie Gaven and Tommy Heinemann each scored a goal in the first 10 minutes as the visiting Columbus Crew defeated Real Salt Lake 2-0.
• Dwayne De Rosario scored two second-half goals as D.C. United beat the host San Jose Earthquakes 2-0.
Stay Thirsty wins Jim Dandy
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Javier Castellano scored two big wins at Saratoga, riding Stay Thirsty to victory in the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes for 3-year-olds and Zagora in the $500,000 Diana Stakes for fillies and mares.
• Preakness winner Shackleford is the 5-2 morning- line favorite in a field of eight for today’s 1 1/8-mile Haskell Invitational at Saratoga.
